Kill the lights, turn off the camera, and close out of that social media app if you want to know the real trick to getting ahead in business. Because, what is going on in the background when all eyes are off is the true star behind the secret to success. I am referring to the power of repetition, and if you think it seems basic, boring, and lacking thrill, you may be right, but I am here to show you just how deep it can go.
Repetition may seem like a simple concept, but It actually requires a high level of concentration and, if done properly, will build within you a strong foundation for accuracy and growth. Repeatedly completing an action or task, no matter how mundane, increases how efficient we become at that task. Repeated completion of the task moves it from our conscious brain to the subconscious, allowing for that task to become second nature to us, like tying our shoelaces or riding a bike.
What I have gleaned from nearly ten years of running my own business is that the driving factor for much of the success I have achieved comes from the day-in and day-out repetition of the core elements. For me, as a reseller, those repetitive tasks include photographing items, creating their listings, and packaging and shipping listings once sold. I have a very standard procedure for doing all three that has worked well for me over the years that I do not stray far from. (Keep reading to see my tips for completing those tasks at the end of the page).
There is an empowerment that comes from building efficiency through repetition. Being able to subconsciously perform tasks at a quality level can streamline our day can leave room for us to include additional tasks, gives us more time to spend on research and development, or simply allows for more rest.
One of the amazing benefits of completing repetitive daily routine tasks is reaching a level of constant and steady incremental growth. It becomes a wash, rinse, repeat process that routinely turns in positive results. Because repetitive action becomes so reliable in our business we may not feel the need to monitor the results as closely, leaving space for us to just be in the flow.

I can personally testify that repetition was a driving force that was key in order for me to achieving consistent results in back to back years, as shown on my sales graph.
We become what we repeatedly do.

Once you reach the point of consistency through repetition, you can then adjust the parameters of your business to reach even higher marks. But, that is a topic for another day.
Below is the list of procedure and tips that I consistently use for repetitive photographing, listing, and shipping items on the daily. Let me know in the comments below what you do differently.
PHOTOGRAPHY
- Choose your equipment for photographing. I simply use my phone. Whichever device you use, know the settings and become comfortable with how it operates.
- Have a dedicated space to hang, flat lay, or model (in person or using a form) your items. I photograph the majority of my items against a white wall in my bedroom using a decorative hook to hold the hanger.
- Use good lighting. I use a led 100 watt work light mounted on a stand and a ring light in a window-lit room to help illuminate my items. Certain times of day require different angles of lighting to keep them shadow-free and best lit.
- Take a set number of photos for each item. Most platforms allow for multiple photographs in the listing. I make sure to get a full shot of front and back, a close up of front and back, product tag, contents tag, and a close up of any distinguishing features. When applicable, I model the item to show fit.
CREATING THE LISTING
- For the title I make sure to use as many descriptive words as the title allows including brand, specific style name, fit or size, color, and material.
- For the body of the listing, I repeat the title, as well as add in descriptive keywords that buyers would search for (google search engine optimization for more tips). Add style names that are trending/popular that fit your item description.
- Include measurements and or any flaws or defects that you want your buyer to know about.
PACKAGING AND SHIPPING
- Choose how often to ship. I ship every day, but if this is not an option for you, choose one or two days each week as dedicated shipping days.
- Have a dedicated place to store your shipping supplies so you know where they are and they are readily accessible to you. If you are shipping for a Poshmark sale, make use of the free boxes from the Post Office to save on that expense. You can order supplies through usps or you can pick them up from your local branch.
- Print your labels all in one batch. Whether you print from home or have to go elsewhere to print, save time by printing them at one given time.
- Decide what way you prefer to package your items and buy supplies to fit your needs. Some sellers package in paper wrapping, others use plastic bags. Although it isn’t as eco-friendly, I do prefer to ship in a sealed plastic bag to help protect the item from unforeseen damage. I also add a simple thank you sticker to each package.
- Gather all your sales, supplies and shipping labels before you begin and, again, have a dedicated work space. Your work space does not have to be fancy or elaborate. I literally put an ironing board up in my kitchen and use the free space on the counter and the board to put my packages together. I put the board away when I am done for easy cleanup.
