Self-discovery is an ongoing journey that takes us to the center of our being. Within the core of each of us lies our truest self, including our unique qualities and abilities, as well as our innermost desires and passions. By looking within ourselves we can evaluate and designate our beliefs, strengths, and even our purpose. And, by dressing in a way that reflects our core, we can put those parts of us on display and make a statement in a fashionable way.
Core aesthetics in fashion are niche styles designed to create a visual vibe used for self-expression based on history, situations, environment, culture, and feelings. Names like gorpcore, balletcore, goblincore, castle core, and cottagecore are just a few core aesthetics that are finding their way into this modern way of identity dressing. What exactly does that mean?
Let’s break it down.

BALLETCORE dressing features a blend of color, texture, and fabrics reminiscent of a dancer. Think pastel pink. Tulle. Cashmere cardigans, ballet flats, and tights, and dressing in layers. Balletcore is feminine, delicate, and soft.
GORPCORE style reflects the great outdoors. Derived from the adventure-healthy trail snack called GORP (good ol’ raisins and peanuts or granola, oats, raisins, and peanuts), every outdoor adventurer’s go-to snack, dressing in this style means donning a flannel, hiking boots, lightweight and breathable short or pants and a puffer jacket.
COTTAGECORE is a rustic, rural style that consists of flowing maxi skirts, garden floral prints, leather clogs and lace up boots and vintage touches. Cottagecore is a nostalgic nod to simpler times and country living dressed in loose, organic fabrics.
BADDIE CORE dressing centers on confidence, bold makeup, and a fierce attitude. Whatever makes you feel confident is fair game in this aesthetic. Leather pants and gold hoops, 80s neon and spiked hair, or streetwear baggy jeans and a hello kitty cropped tee. This aesthetic focuses on personal authenticity and expression without defining a specific fashion piece.
These examples are just a few of the many cores of style. A quick internet search can lead you to many more.
