Fifty and Thrifty

In case the title was not a dead giveaway, I recently turned fifty years old. As a thrift reseller in the biz for the past ten years, I have waited a long time to proudly use the titular phrase. Age brings wisdom, they say, and to me it brought me the realization that I was not living my life in alignment with my true passion. So, I decided to make a change.

Though I feel that I was born with a thrifted spoon in my mouth, it took forty years of life, my then sixteen year-old daughter, and a pair of lavender Nike canvas sneakers to light the resale fire within me. My daughter introduced me to the Poshmark app in 2014, I bought her the shoes, and the rest, they say, is history. Becoming a reseller was never on my radar, but it was exactly what I needed in my life.

Now, after ten years of reselling, first part-time, and then full-time along with purchasing a brick and mortar consignment store, I know that there is still a lot that I can learn.

In an unexpected twist of fate during the weekend of my 50th birthday, I began developing painful symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis in my hands, wrists, and shoulders limiting my mobility and making it harder for me to source the old-fashioned way at the thrift store. The pain grew in intensity requiring me to pivot to a new way of sourcing inventory. Though I have dabbled in online sourcing and retail arbitrage, I decided to purchase the Online Sourcing Guide from six-figure reseller Molly McIndoe, to see what insight, knowledge, and value I could add to my belt and use to work my reselling career smarter, not harder.

To source successfully online, you must make intentional and informed decisions about the items you purchase to sell. Molly’s Online Sourcing Guide does a very nice job explaining the ‘why’ behind many of the decisions you must make, as well as giving guidance for where and how to source online successfully. I was introduced to several online resources that I had not used prior or previously known about.

While there are many free resources available to resellers of all levels and genres, It was worth the price for me to get inside the brain of a successful online sourcing reseller and glean all the juicy nuggets of her tried-and-true information that I could. And while I have my own hidden online gems not exposed in this resource, I found the guidance presented in this guide to be thoughtful and relevant to resellers of all levels.

To put McIndoe’s words to the test using advice from the guide, I sourced this House of Harlow 1960 for $35 and sold it for my full asking price of $100. I also sourced this Veronica Beard top online for $28 and accepted a $90 offer from a liker, both resulting in a quick flip and easy profit.

Purchasing additional knowledge about online sourcing was a win/win for me. Reselling takes a lot of know-how, mental and physical muscle, perseverance, and passion to find the right pieces that can turn a profit. If tools like the Online Sourcing Guide can help me take some of the muscle out of my sourcing during my times of increased pain, then that is the icing on my 50th birthday cake.
