If you happened to stumble across this post, or even if you sought it out, it is your lucky day.
But what exactly is luck? Many people believe they are lucky. Others believe the opposite. Agreeably, most people believe that luck is something you either have or you don’t. Is it a surprise windfall from a scratch off ticket that happens once in a blue moon…or is it something that has less to do with random chance and more to do with science as suggested by Janice Kaplan and Barnaby Marsh in their book How Luck Happens, Using the Science of Luck to Transform Work, Love, and Life.
Want to know more? Stop looking for that four leaf clover, pull up a chair, and let’s investigate.

Is luck getting a bad rap? There is a common misperception that luck is out of our control, when in reality, creating luck is a process that any one of us is capable of. Understanding what we do and do not have control over within the framework of lives is the first step on our path toward luck. When we ignore the things we cannot control and repeatedly place ourselves in situations and environments where opportunity has a greater chance to arise, good fortune just may show up at our doorstep more often than not.
According to the authors, luck is found where opportunity and chance collide. It is the combination of random occurrences teaming up with our own talent, insight, and hard work. When we place ourselves in situations that have a higher probability for profit and success (something within our control), and we put the right elements in place, such as our skills and work ethic (also within our control), we end up with greater odds than just pure chance of getting the thing we desire.
Another great way we can increase our chances for luck is to stay attentive to opportunities.
Opportunities are all around you. You just have to learn to see them.
Barnaby Marsh, How Luck Happens.
When you follow that up by believing that anything and everything is possible, and teaching yourself to be okay with whatever the outcome is, that mindset becomes the pot of gold at the rainbow’s end.
One final element related to luck can be derived from Henry Ford’s famous quote about personal attitude, and that is this, “whether you think you are lucky, or you think you are not– you’re right“.
When we apply this piece of philosophy to the principle of luck, it helps to show how much our attitude determines our beliefs about success and failure, and can be applied to any relationship, project, and endeavor in our lives. Thoughts become things. Therefore, good thoughts can generate good luck, while bad thoughts are likely to bring on the bad. Generally speaking, once you adopt a positive attitude and this new understanding about luck, your life is in your control.
